Lazurus is a simple AppleScript application. It will attempt to quit the Finder if it is running, and if it isn't running, it will attempt to re-launch the Finder. It will stop and give warning before proceeding to issue the quit command to the Finder, and then ask if you want to re-start the Finder right away. This is a version of my FinderReset script with some basic dialog choices in case you change your mind.
Requirements
You must have AppleScript installed in your system.
You must have Sändi's Additions installed. Sändi's Additions is available from info-mac and other fine software archives.
This should work on either OS8 or any version of System 7.x with AppleScript and the scriptable Finder.
Usage
Double click on the Lazurus icon. A dialog will appear asking if you are sure you want to quit the Finder. If you click the Ok button, the Finder will quit and your desktop icons will vanish. You will then be presented with a dialog box that asks if you want to re-launch the Finder. If you choose to re-launch the Finder from this dialog, the Finder will reappear immediately. If you choose not to restart the Finder, Lazurus will quit. If there are no applications running on your system, the Finder will restart by itself. If there are other applications running, the Finder will not restart.
Other Notes
This is use-at-your-own-risk-ware. Its just a tiny little script, so I doubt that your hard drive will turn into toast, or you CPU will look like a bowl of jelly just by using this, but there is a real good reason why there is no quit command for the Finder--you are not supposed to be quiting it. There are those with a firm grip on what they are doing that may have reasons for quiting the Finder--if that isn't you, don't use this app.
This AppleScript application is free for personal, non-commercial use. Anyone may distribute this application so long as they do not charge any fees. Since this is freeware, support is limited to my spare time, but e-mail me with questions, comments, suggestions, rants, raves, or just to say howdy at: tjb@inch.com, or check my web site at http://www.inch.com/~tjb/adoor.html. I try to respond to everyone, but I can't always.
